The CoViD-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on the lives of the marginalised, and irreversibly displaced livelihoods of millions. Within these groups of affected communities, women in both urban and rural areas have borne a larger proportion of this burden. As is usually the case with any strategy to combat large scale crises, their health and working conditions have suffered immensely in the aftermath.
Therefore, in March, 2021 we started the Chhalaang Foundation, with a view to enable such women to not only restore, but hopefully improve upon, their lives prior to the pandemic. We primarily seek to do this in a number of ways, primarily by creating a market for their handmade products, providing vocational training, and ensuring delivery of proper healthcare and rations for their families. In the long term, Chhalaang seeks to provide means for these women to become self-reliant, and have a greater degree of control over their living conditions and means of livelihood.
